Why Should You Journal?

There are myriad reasons why you should take up the practice of journaling. This post is only going to touch on a few reasons why. I could go on and on about the benefits of the practice but for simplicity’s sake I’m going to stick to these three reasons.

Reason One

Your journal is a tool for self-improvement. Yes, you’ll write regular diary entries for the most part. In between those entries you will end up delving into your ‘self’ and how you want your life to be. It helps to think of your journal as a tool or workbook for your life. In your journal you should be putting your hopes, dreams, wishes, and wants. Once you have those things written down you’ll see them as a goal to work towards.

Reason Two

Your journal is a record of your life. Either of your thoughts or of your daily actions. These entries are great for looking back on for “advice” for what to do. Use the journal to spur your advances into the world.

Reason Three

Journaling at its core is a document. Someone someday is going to read it unless you destroy it in some way. Most of us are writing for posterity so we’re not concerned with who is going to read whatever we’ve written. In our minds (mine particularly), we picture someone in the distant future opening up one of these volumes and getting a glimpse of the world we’re living in. Our journals need not be perfect in this regard. Journals are never perfect anyway.

So, why should you journal? These three reasons are the most common. There are others and each reason is just as valid as the next. Journal to your heart’s content. Daily. Monthly. Whatever. There are no rules other than what you impose upon yourself.
